Summary:
The Weatherford Kangaroos came up just short in the bi-district playoff game against VR Eaton 21-14. The Roos drove down deep into Eagle territory and had a pass into the end zone at the buzzer to win it but it was picked off. This was a hard-fought battle for the Roos that was highlighted by the defense limiting a high-powered Eaton offense.
The Roos got a quick stop on defense but a turnover on offense gave the ball to the Eagles on the Roo 11 yard line. From there the defense held them to 4th down but ultimately the defense gave up a score. The offense marched the ball right down the field after that though thanks to Cisco Caston. He had a huge kickoff return to midfield and then on 3rd and 11 he took a screen pass from Kaden Kerbow for 44 yards and a score.
The defense held again thanks to a big play from Lane Malone and Patrick Wiley on 3rd down to give the offense the ball back. The offense took it all the way down the field again until a turnover ended the drive. The drive was dominated by Kerbow who had three big passes on 3rd downs to Melvin Polk twice and RJ Smiley. He also had an 18 yard run. After the turnover the defense forced a quick punt with a three and out. Tanner Matlock had all three tackles on the series including a tackle for loss and a big sack on third down.
After trading possessions at the end of the half Ryan Clark got a big sack and caused fumble on 4th down for the Eagles in Roo territory.
The Roos took the 2nd half kickoff and scored quickly thanks to a 58 yard pass from Kerbow to Smiley. The drive was capped off by a Hayden Hansen QB sneak making the score 14-7 Roos and giving them their first lead.
The Eagles came right back down and tied the score at 14 the next drive. Following this the two teams traded possessions back and forth with no points scored.
The fourth quarter saw the Eagles start with the ball and drive down and score to make it 21-14 Eaton. The Roos responded with a drive down the field featuring 3rd down conversions from Kerbow to Dez and to Seth Robertson. The Roos had a costly holding penalty that put them out of field goal range though and ended up punting the ball back to Eaton. With the clock winding down the Roo Defense came up big again forcing a punt thanks to two big tackles, one for loss, from defensive end Riley Wrinkle. On fourth down and less than a minute to play in the game the Roos came after the Eaton punt and forced a bad snap over the punter’s head, giving the ball to the Roo Offense with no timeouts but on the plus side of the 50.
Kerbow drove the Roos down inside the 20 with several passes to Caston and one to Hansen. After some late penalties each way the Roos had one untimed down with the ball on the nine yard line. The Roos drew up a play to get the ball from Kerbow to Baylor commit Caston and the ball was intercepted.
The Roos showed great fight and gave the fanbase a ton to look forward to in the future.
